Education, Experience and Expertise - The Highlights
1980 I graduated from Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Psychology. Why? Because I wanted a profession in which I didn't have to work evenings or weekends. Seriously.
Later that year I worked at the Black Hills Waldorf school as a preschool/kindergarten teacher.
1981 Discovering that the classroom was not for me, I did not renew my contract, but instead decided to work on our own early childhood development project. My husband and I started a family.
1981-1987 I worked as a stay-at-home-mom with 2 children.
1987 I attended a conference which convinced me that I could be strongly faith-oriented AND work in the psychology field. I began to volunteer as a group facilitator for a faith-based halfway house with an addictions recovery program.
I was also very active in my church as a spiritual mentor, small group leader, prayer minister, and eventually an elder.
1988-1992 I pursued a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology degree from St. Mary's University in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
1988-1994 I worked at Midwest Challenge, Andersen Associates, and then Nystrom and Associates as an outpatient mental health counselor. I received specialized training and supervision in complex trauma and personality disorders.
1994-1998 I moved to Denver with my family and took a hiatus from counseling.
1997-1999 I received training in contemplative practices and spiritual formation.
1998 I established a private practice as an unlicensed psychotherapist.
1999 I worked as the interim pastor of my church, continuing my role as spiritual mentor and leader, teacher and minister.
1994-2005 I taught spiritual formation groups, spoke regularly at my church, taught at several women's retreats, led small groups, mentored individuals, and was a member of the core leadership team of my church.
2000 I became a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Colorado.
2005 I left my faith system and began the hard work of recovery and spiritual growth beyond the confines of a specific ideology.
2007-2008 I completed Coaching Training at Newfield Network.
2008 I founded Resonance Counseling, Coaching, and Consulting, specializing in trauma, mood disorders, life coaching, faith transitions and recovery from spiritual abuse.
2012 I began teaching online courses at Live it to the Full. Walking Wounded: Help for Those Hurt by Church (with Kathy Escobar), Power Play: Engaging Your Iconic Self, The Ex-Good Christian Women's Club (with Kathy Escobar) and The Iconic Self Online Experience (with Jen Lee).
2013 I created Phyllis Mathis School of Life, a learning community in Broomfield, CO.
